MOTUNRAYO AKINOLA: I 'n' I
The exhibition's title, I 'n' I, is taken from the Rastafarian lexicon - a phrase often used in place of 'we', it expresses a concept similar to the Holy Trinity - a person is not a distinct being, but is spiritually tied to the world and community. I 'n' I explores this notion of connection, support and care, or a lack of, within community.
This project draws out facets of Motunrayo's personal philosophies. The ladder, rendered repeatedly at scales from miniature to oversized, often fails, slumps, or spans impassible zones. In working this way, there is an acceptance of unknown outcomes - choosing between acceptance and erasure.
Made of cardboard and tape the works begin fragile, but are then embalmed in shellac; speaking to ideas of life/ death, support networks and a sense of comfort.
